Those of you unfortunate enough to have been following me from the beginning are aware of my admiration for Jorge Luis Borges. In fact, this blog was intended to solely remain dedicated to dissecting Borges’ words. to seek meaning in the labyrinths he weaves and to find some semblance of order in the glorious chaos of the infinite.

My love affair with Borges began with the Library of Babel (Those of you unfamiliar would find these two articles illuminating and-dare I say?- compelling. Part 1-https://incoherent-ramblings.medium.com/on-the-magnificent-library-of-borges-33ded3c86418 Part 2-https://incoherent-ramblings.medium.com/mathematical-logs-finite-infinities-and-a-confounding-library-cc8b90d7d7a9)

If you decided against going through the trouble of reading all that (I…

(Author’s Note: Wrote this story way back in matric and came across this again last year. Fairly pedestrian, but frankly, I still enjoy it.)

As he waited for his name to be called, Mr Raza was getting anxious. After all, it is not every day that the fate of one’s eternal life is to be decided. Mr Raza had good cause to be nervous; a retired bureaucrat, he was not exactly the portrait of an honest officer. Prone to sudden and prolonged bouts of acute laziness; he seemed to be under the impression that government service mostly entailed having tea…

(Author’s Note: I have come to the realisation that Medium.com- brilliant platform as it is- is, perhaps, unsuited to Urdu typesetting owing to its lack of formatting options. In the unlikely event that someone is actually reading…

“By this art you may contemplate the variation of the 23 letters ….”

Anatomy of Melancholy, Pt. 2, Sec. II, Mem. IV

In a previous post, I discussed the concept of Borges’ infinite Library of Babel. While I briefly delved into the mathematics earlier, I intend to mathematically ascertain the scale of this hypothetical bibliothèque extraordinaire. I must reference W.L. Bloch’s exceptional book- “The Unimaginable Mathematics of Borges’ Library of Babel”- that aided me immensely and is the basis of much of the calculations contained herein and without which, I might have been as lost as Borges’ proverbial librarians.

The…

Bear with me for a while.
Imagine you wake up in a library. By all accounts, it appears to be a regular, non-descript, conventional library. Excepting the fact that this particular library is composed not of rooms but rather hexagonal galleries bounded by a railing with a ventilation shaft in the centre, restricted by a low railing. Of the six walls enclosing you, four are home to shelves not quite taller than the average man. Each shelf contains rows upon rows of seemingly identical books. …
